Chapter Eight

Chip lifted another forkful of cheesecake toward Sydney’s mouth, but instead of allowing him to feed her again, she took the utensil from him and ate it herself. “Thanks.”

Knowing Levi was outside observing everything made her too self-conscious, especially since Levi had done the same thing at the Italian restaurant.

Chip wiped something from her chin with his napkin, again mirroring Levi’s behavior nights earlier.

She slid Levi a sideways glance. Had he been watching for that brief moment? Of course, he was staring right at them. Uncomfortable heat crawled up her neck and face.

“It’s funny,” Chip said. “For weeks now—ever since they started the renovations to the TV studio and kicked me out of my office there—I’ve had the catbird seat in the newsroom, and I didn’t even realize it.”

Sydney blinked and waited for her interpreter to explain the term, catbird seat.

“Apparently, that’s a desirable position,” he said in her ear. “Sorry that took so long. I had to look it up. Where does he come up with these phrases?”

She released the breath she’d been holding. “Perhaps it was me who had the catbird seat.”

He smoothed a curl off of her cheek. “Maybe we both did, huh?”

Levi groaned through the earpiece.

She hated to admit—if only to herself—that she was trying extra hard to develop feelings for her date. Which was strange because she’d been crushing on Chip for months. What wasn’t to like? He had classic all-American good looks with those blue eyes and that blond hair and muscular build. For heaven’s sake, he’d been a pro ballplayer, and now he was on the news. What woman wouldn’t want to date him? That was clear from the hoard of people at work always swamping him, as well as the fact that every female vendor who came through the office flirted with him. She should be thrilled that he’d chosen her. Taking a bite of her apple pie, she half-listened to him tell a story about some player from his team when he was in the minor leagues.

“…Kowalski is the team’s cellar-dweller. He can’t get off the schneid, yet he asks the owner for a thirty percent raise. The rest of the guys are busting up laughing.”

Levi piped up. “The worst player on the team, who was on a scoreless streak, was asking for a raise.”

A man at a nearby table came over to them. “Mr. Haggerty, I’m sorry to bother you, but I’m a huge fan. I saw you play against the Braves in 2014 at Marlins Park.” He offered Chip a napkin and a pen. “Would you mind?”

Chip rubbed his hands together. “Nah, I always got time for a fan.” After he scrawled his signature on the napkin, he gave it to the man then shook hands with him. “Enjoy your dessert.”

“Thanks. Pleasure to meet you.” To Sydney, the man said, “Sorry to interrupt, miss.” Then he retreated to his table.

She waved away the apology and lowered her voice so the fan wouldn’t hear. “That was pretty cool. I’ve never known anyone worthy of an autograph before.
